5 Steps to Looking Stylish in Perimenopause and Menopause

5 Steps to Looking Stylish in Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause and menopause has meant crazy body changes. Now that your clothes that you used to wear no longer fit or look good, what do you wear now? Girlfriend, I’ve got you covered.

Here is my 5 step process to looking and feeling fabulous in your clothes, even if you are having a bloated day.

1. Acknowledge and accept that your body has changed. There is no doubt that perimenopause and menopause change our body composition. Which means the clothing you used to love to wear may not work for you anymore. This can be hard to come to terms with. But there is hope! Keep reading.

2. Decide what you can control and what you can’t. You can’t control that if you are still alive, you have to go through perimenopause and menopause. There is no way around it. But you can control your lifestyle choices and you most certainly can control what you choose to wear. And girlfriend, what you choose to wear can make a HUGE difference to how you feel about your changing body.

3. What is possible for you now? Yes, you may not be able to fit into or look good in the clothes you used to wear, but what can you wear now will look good on you?

Many of us go to one of two extremes. We either berate our bodies and try desperately to fit into the clothes we used to wear and if we don’t we work out more, diet more and keep berating our bodies every time we try to find something in our closet to fits.

Or we feel such shame about our bodies that we feel it should not be seen and we attempt to cover up by wearing big, black, sack-like clothing.

But there is so much in between these two extremes. It’s about discovering the new possibilities. Just like we do with the other areas of our lives. During midlife we re-invent, re-create and find what works best now! Your clothing is no different.

4. Get real with how your clothing needs have changed. I have been amazed at just how much my clothing needs have changed. As a designer and stylist, I’ve been taking notes and this is what I have found.

We need:

Clothing that adapts to our body changes. Because our bodies can look different every day, we need clothing that adapt, can be styled various ways to best how our bodies look and feel today.

Shape but not tight. Again, we often think in extremes. It’s either button-popping tight or it’s like a big sack. Either extreme is not flattering. We need clothing that gives us shape but isn’t tight and uncomfortable.

Soft, breathable fabrics. I have found that my skin has become so much more sensitive to fabric texture and because of our crazy internal heating systems, we need breathable fabrics that means it’s less likely sweat marks will show on our clothes.

Versatile. There is no doubt that clothing that meets all these requirements are going to be a little more pricey, but if these pieces are super versatile, you can get so much more wear out of them. Items that dress up and down, can mix and match and be styled various ways will mean that we always have something fabulous to wear, no matter the occasion.

Coverage. This will vary from woman to woman. Some women don’t want to show their upper arms or knees, some women are okey to show these parts. Either way, your clothing needs to support you and not make it look like you just threw something on to cover up.

I know this may seem overwhelming and begs the question, where will I find clothing like this?

5. I have designed a collection that meets all of these criteria. Because of my own experience of entering perimenopause, I set out to work out what works so that I could solve it for all of us. My collection is especially designed to adapt to your body changes, give you shape, is made of soft, breathable, high quality fabrics, is super versatile and can be customized to suit you so you get the coverage you desire.
