How Perimenopause Made Me a Better Designer

How Perimenopause Made Me a Better Designer

Who would have thought that suddenly gaining three inches on my belly would result in a collection designed to help women in perimenopause and menopause look and feel fabulous?

When I turned 50, perimenopause hit me and hit me hard. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting it. I had heard my 50+ friends talk about it, but I thought I would be okey since I lived a healthy lifestyle.

It seemed to happen overnight. One minute I felt good in my body and the next I had an extra three inches around my belly.

And I was on QVC a lot around this time. Seven cameras facing me from all different angles. I got to see myself on camera A LOT!

I would carefully plan what I was going to wear on set the next day, but by the time I was going on set, my body had bloat up and the outfit suddenly didn’t look the same. Not exactly a confidence booster as I’m about to go on national television.

And don’t even get me started on shopping for clothes. The brand I represented required me to wear solid color clothing so I didn’t clash with any of the prints on the handbags I was selling. I didn’t have any solid color clothes. I am a print girl and even as a designer, I focus on prints because they are so much easier to wear. A well-shaped printed garment does wonders for hiding panty lines and bloated bellies.

When I’d go shopping, the solid color fabrics clung in all the wrong places. And suddenly I was shopping for spanx just to avoid the vpl.

So I put on my designer and stylist hat and started figuring out what we women need from our clothes to look and feel fabulous as we navigate these crazy body changes.

  1. We need shape, but a little extra space. So many times, women end up wearing black sack-like clothing to try to hide. Wearing clothes with shape instead of shapeless numbers can make you look so much slimmer!

  1. We need clothing that will always fit so we don’t have to dread getting dressed in the morning for fear that what we planned to wear doesn’t fit or look good.

  1. We need items that can be styled different waysto adapt to how our bodies are today. What feels good today may not feel good tomorrow.

  1. We need breathable fabrics that are soft on our skin.Hormonal changes can make our skin feel more sensitive. Plus, breathable fabrics will help us feel more comfortable when our temperature gauge goes awry.

  1. When we wear solid colors, the fabric needs to give us hold and the cuts need to work to disguise our bellies.

  1. We need to wear color now more than ever. As we age, we lose color in our hair and skin. Wearing color that works for our complexion can make us look so much more youthful than black.

So I set out to do all of these things. And based on what my clients say, I have achieved it.

Was it easy? No. Did it require a lot of testing? Yes.

But are we worth it?

Without a doubt, yes!
