You go to get dressed in the morning and suddenly…. your pants won’t zip up! You try on a few more outfits… and still! What is going on?
There is no doubt that our bodies change when we hit perimenopause and menopause.
When I hit perimenopause, I suddenly had another 3 inches around my belly and I felt bloated everywhere!
I dove into research to figure out what was going on and how to fix it. And even though I have made lifestyle changes and started HRT, it is still a bit of a wild ride.
Sadly, there is no quick fix. Every change takes time to make a difference.
So how do we move through the world without hating the bodies we live in?
The clothes we choose to wear can make such a difference to how we feel about our bodies. But when the clothes we have don’t fit or flatter, what then?
Here is what I have found works:
1. Acknowledge and accept that your body has changed. I know! This is very hard! But this is the first step to creating a fabulous look that works for you at this life stage.
2. Go through your closet and take out all the items that no longer fit or look good on your body as it is right now. I know this is hard because you may feel tempted to hold onto the clothes that don’t fit in hope that one day you may squeeze back into them. Resist the temptation.
3. If there are some items you are not ready to let go of because they are sentimental or expensive, allow yourself to keep only a few, but put them in another closet so you don’t see them every day. You don’t want a constant reminder that you are now ‘too fat’ to wear them.
4. Assess what does fit you. Which of these do you really like? Which of them makes you feel fabulous? Being able to identify what feels good to wear now is such an important part of the process because that is what we are going to replicate.
