Confused as to what to wear to work? In this live I share some fun, yet professional work look ideas that will adapt to your changing body and make you look fabulous!
What is professional these days? Since the pandemic, everything has changed. If you work hybrid, it may seem that a silk blouse goes perfectly with sweatpants when you are on zoom meetings, but what happens if you need to go out to pick up your kids from school?… you will probably be changing your clothes several times in a day.
If you work in an office, you may have found that dress codes are a thing of the past, but does a sloppy work look speak of your professionalism?
Then there is the perimenopause, menopause thing that adds so much complication to getting dressed in the morning. During perimenopause, your body may feel like it’s a different size every day. And you may not be wrong. So getting dressed for work becomes a guessing game of which size pants you should brave putting on so you don’t feel absolutely horrible before running out the door.
Okey let’s take a deep breath.
Here are some tips and tools to make it easier for you to throw something on and feel fabulous in 5min flat.
- Give some thought to what image you want to portray. Whether you like it or not, the way you dress says a lot about yourself to the world. So, why not make it say something that you want to say? Starting off with intention will get you better results than just throwing on what’s clean, ironed and fits.
- What is the brand identity of the company you work for? This is an important consideration especially if you run your own company and you are your brand. You want to find that perfect balance between representing who you are and representing your company or the company you work for. At times this may seem like a contradiction, but who you are makes you good at what you do, so it’s important to embrace that.
- Build a good basic wardrobe that easily mixes and matches. You don’t have to have a lot of clothes to have plenty to wear. You could have a pair of pants, a skirt and a fitted vest that will mix and match perfectly and create tons of outfits. Then compliment your basics with fun color, print and accessories if that is the look you are going for.
- Look for items that will adapt to your body changing all the time. I have decided not to buy a pair of pants I love if I can only comfortably wear them when I’m not having a bloated day. Rather, I choose pants that are made of stretch fabric and can adjust to my changing body without me having to get all up into my head about it every time I put them on.
- Build a wardrobe that will adjust to your lifestyle. To keep from having to change your clothes every time you do something different, opt for items that can be dressed up and down for more versatility. For example, a good wrap dress can be worn as a dress to an office meeting then tie the ties on the inside to convert it into a duster you can wear over a tee shirt and a pair of jeans for working from home and running errands.
- Don’t be afraid to play with your professional look. There is more freedom now to create a look that expresses who you are. I see many women at high levels of their careers ditch the pant suit for a more feminine dress that still looks professional. I see women find ways of expressing their creativity even if they are in finance.
The wonderful thing about getting older is that we do things we would have never have dared to do when we were younger. So have some fun, learn to express yourself in the ways that work best for you!
